Hey guys-

I'm applying for a job in Rockville that I'm REALLY hoping I get (I'm well qualified and fits perfectly with what I've done in the past).... anywho, I was wondering how, as a place to live for someone like me (I'm 22, a year out of undergrad, and a gay white male), is Gaithersburg/Rockville? Of course, this is in a very early stage, but I've only been to MD a few times (once in 2002 on a trip in high school to Washington, Delaware....twice to the "two mile strip in MD on 522"...once on 68 through W MD....once to get to IAD via Frederick... and once as a complete random trip to Baltimore on 70)...so I really haven't been to Rockville/Gburg specifically.

Also, how many parks are nearby? I'm a big fan of fall foliage, hills/Appalachia, small streams/brooks/creeks/rivers, lakes, etc.

Thanks!

P.S. Don't ever, EVER move to Arizona for any reason whatsoever. Visit, but don't move!

Where in Rockville is the job? There's plenty of parks nearby, that's not something you need to worry about. There's also some good camping if you take I66 into Virginia.

It's just outside of the Beltway by about a mile or so.

I assume you're working in Rockville. I'd take a look at the Grosvnor area or possibly in the Rockville Towncenter area. You can expect rents to be 1400-1800 per month depending on the size of rental you're looking for. If you move out to Germantown, you'll get cheaper rents but if your working in Rockville the drive won't be too bad. Another option would be to look at the Silver Spring area or you could live out in Laurel. The ICC is being built that should connect just south of Laurel to the area pretty well.

Yes the job is in Rockville...and wow, those rents are high! Right now I'm paying $580 for a 1 br 1 ba ~600 sq ft apt in a very affluent area. Is Gaithersburg any cheaper or are they about the same?

Hm, are there any places I should absolutely avoid? I heard about PG County already, and I don't want to live that far away anyways...so I'd like to stick to either around Rockville/Gaithersburg...or, if I have to, just across the river.

Lets put it this way, if you plan on living in the safer areas, rents are going to be high. You can live in unsafe parts of PG County and maybe get a place for 800 to 1000 a month. I'd really just spend the extra few hundred a month and live in Montgomery County. I don't know Germantown well but I would recommend looking there since it's cheaper. If you're willing to drive 30 to 45 min each way you can rent in Frederick much cheaper also. Here's a place in Grosvnor near where you'll be working (I assume).

Avalon Advantage in Bethesda - Avalon at Grosvenor Station

I don't know anything about the community or the apartment complex. I just googled grosvnor. It's rents seem reasonable. I looked at the google map of it and it looks metro walkable. The grosvnor stop is a good one to be on during rush hour because all the trains go there. After that point only half the trains go the rest of the line. There are a ton of apartment complexes built right up to that metro stop. You can probably go there and drive from one to the next and find out the rental cost of each. It's also on Rockville Pike which goes right through main Rockville. It's got tons of shopping and the White Flint Mall is very close.
