Hello Everyone,

My family may be relocating to MD from San Diego. I really don't know much about the area and I am looking for some information about target living areas. What I am reading on Gaithersburg is scaring me a little.

Work would be located around the 119/124 intersection. I am looking to keep the commute around 20 min or less.
What would be an area with good public schools, safe and a sense of community. Ideally also close to shopping, town center and park? Oriented towards family life.

I am fairly used to expensive cost of living but if anybody has an idea whether Gaithersburg is more like San Francisco-expensive or San Diego-expensive, I would really appreciate the feedback.

Also, in general, what should I expect coming from California to Maryland?

I am sorry if my questions are a bit general but I am looking to get a feeling for this relocation.

Thank you all in advance!

I would think that maybe Germantown would be a better fit for you.. It's a bit more family oriented IMO.. but there are nice parts. Maybe King Farm in Rockville/Gaithersburg

Anywhere in the area you will be close to shopping.. depending on what sort of shopping you like to do

Why not the Kentlands? You could walk to work from there since it's right nearby. There's no need to be afraid there, and the schools are very good. It's a great community with lots of stores. Seems perfect. There is as bus to Metro, although it isn't too far to drive there.

This past week we looked at apartments/condos in Germantown, Gaithersburg and Rockville. In Gaithersburg, I too, recommend the Kentlands/Lakelands area. You can rent/lease a 2 bedroom apartment or condo for $1,650 - $2,200. It is a very nice community within shops and restaurants within walking distance. Check Craigs list. We found some great deals. I would stay away from the Lake Forest Mall.

You may want to check Rockville as well. There are some nice places there as well.

Sorry, I don't really have any information on schools. Good luck!

One other thing. The Montgomery County Police and Rockville Police were very helpful regarding safe areas, etc. If you find something you like, call and give them the address and they will give you the crime statistics.

Thanks everyone, it is very helpful.
What is the best way to search Craig's List for apartments in Kentlands/Lakelands? Is it Southern MD or MD suburbs of DC?
Thanks.
