I was recently offered a teaching position in Maryland. Can anyone tell me about the areas of La Plata, Waldorf, or Silver Springs. Are there any other towns nearby that are both safe and affordable. I need to find affordable housing in these areas by August in time for the start of the school year. How safe are these areas? I am a single woman that would be living alone. Also, can anyone offer any insight about the school districts.

Laplata is basically country and rural...bring a pickup truck and gun rack

Waldorf used to be Laplata untill the price of homes got ridiculous and now everybody's is moving their . It will be a upcoming area if they can get companies to move in and housing controlled.

Silver Spring--bipolar suburb of DC parts are upscale and nice with tons of young professionals making it home. Tons of shops and metro stops with some corporate hq's located their as well. Its going through a major revitalization right now but its close to a tough area of DC and some of that element rolls in.... I would recommend Silver Spring because your catching it at a time of change..good change and your close to DC/Nova for the nightlife..

Define affordable. La Plata is cheaper than other portions of Calvert County but that's also where some of the crime that is actually in the county is located.

If you want safety, if you want to be in nice neighborhoods, family friendly, near lots of ammenities... then affordbale becomes a very loose term.

If you're moving to La Plata from another state even there may give you some sticker shock on the cost of living... if you're moving there from say someplace with a higher cost of living then you'll be happy with the price at least.

I can tell you just north of La Plata has some nice stuff, still rural in many ways but the houses run from the 500s-800s.

Default Waldorf MD

I live in Waldorf area of Maryland, technically White Plains which is right on the border in between Waldorf and La Plata. I have a full finished basement for rent in an upscale neighborhood. I have a 3 level house. The basement would include your own living room, bedroom, full bath, kitchenette, laundry room, walkout patio/yard. If you are interested in a place to stay if you decide to take the job email me at fjennell@hotmail.com to discuss further. I am 29 year old professional female that is looking for another professional female. Thanks.

I will be attending a course in Silver Spring and looking for a clean smoke-free place to stay for the week. Any suggestions? The class is at the St Michael church on Wayne. So far all I have seen are from one extreme to another. Thanks for any help. I will be there the week of Sept 23.
