So what parts of PG county have good schools, are safe and have decent housing prices? I have not really looked at PG County real estate, and don't really know where to start, I've just heard that PG county is worth a look.

Is it April? No seriously, I wouldn't buy anything in PG County! I owned a home there once and actually sold (and moved away) before the values went down. Houses in PG are still too expensive and most are not in move in condition (the affordable ones). I was shown a house once that was ransacked and neglected going for over 200K. Not trying to gut and re-build a house for that much, but then again, you should look for yourself... As for schools, I'd stay with the rural looking parts of Upper Marlboro and Bowie.

Ignore the first two responses as the persons who posted them obviously know nothing about the county. It's a favorite pastime of many in the area to pick on Prince George's County, even more so than NE/SE DC imho. I agree with the post above that whatever you do, you should at least go and look for yourself. Now as someone actually informed about the county I would recommend looking at the following areas:

-Bowie*
-Largo/Mitchellville*
-Greenbelt
-University Park/Berwyn Heights
-College Park/Hyattsville
-Lanham/Seabrook
-Fort Washington*
-Laurel

Some of these places do have undesirable neighborhoods, but overall are pretty good options. The school system overall is subpar, but there are a number of good private schools and a few stellar public schools. As a general rule, in PGC the further you live from DC the better.

The communities with asterisks (*) are generally high end and wealthy, but housing prices are lower than you would see in other counties in the area (the main advantage of PGC). Fort Washington is the wealthiest community in PGC (and one of the wealthiest in the country), but is surrounded by a few not so nice neighborhoods mainly due to its proximity to SE DC.

In my opinion Greenbelt would be a perfect choice as it lacks the crime of other areas, has excellent transportation access (I-495, I-95, Metro, MARC), somewhat moderate housing prices (relative to other areas), has great diversity, has an interesting and unique history, and is host to the best HS in PGC (and one of the best in the nation).

Regarding preoperty values: The property values in Prince George's County haven't declined in a decade, until recently when property values in all of the DC Area counties went down. When I was very young my parents bought a nice (brand new) home in Mitchelville, and when we moved (after about 8-10 yrs) they made serious money on it.

Whatever cpterp. I grew up in PG County I spent most of my LIFE there AND went to UMCP and stayed on campus and off. Keep in my MY opinions are just that MY opinions and I am entitled to them! I lived in or knew somebody who lived in all the area you listed

-Bowie*
-Largo/Mitchellville*
-Greenbelt
-University Park/Berwyn Heights
-College Park/Hyattsville
-Lanham/Seabrook
-Fort Washington*
-Laurel

And there is NO WAY I would recommend Greenbelt with all their traffic and crazy drivers! In My opinion it is not worth it! I stayed in my share of desirable areas but still my house got broken into, my car stolen, etc. These are my experiences but PG didn't get it's rep for no reason and don't wrongly assume saying somebody is not informed If you do not know all of your information, Please and thank You!

I purchased a new construction home in Upper Marlboro off Pennsylvania ave and 301 and I love living here as a matter of fact I never lock my car door and I leave my purse with credit cards/money in my car for the pass 3yrs and my car have never gotten broken into. As a matter of fact my car doors are unlock right now. my next door neighbor inform me her husband leave the front door unlock. All the children play with each other. The neighbors look out for each other. The schools are good Mattaponi Elementary.

All of my neighbors are college educated who moved in the community for a piece of the American dream. I feel safe living here and love living here.

As far as property value goes watch the news property value is decreasing all over America. I work for the 2nd largest mortgage investor and I get calls from homeowners all over the country crying for help telling me their property value have decreased. I get calls from rich/poor/Black/White/Hispanics/Asians/People who live in the North/South/West/East all over the country with lower property value. I have stop foreclosure sales for people who live in the so call best county where only so call rich people live.

I live in Prince Georges county and I love living here. I have never had a problem.

Before buying a Upper Marlboro I used to own a home in NW DC the so call nice area well guess what I sld that house cause I got tired of my house getting robbed but yet I would never tell anyone not to move to NW DC.

RoadTripGurl, your experiences are what have given you the opinion you have of PG and I can understand that. However, I've lived in PG all of my 46 years and have never had a house broken into, a car stolen (or any part thereof) or been mugged. People's individual experiences will always play a role in their opinion of one place or another. I don't think PG is all rainbows, puppy dogs and unicorns but I don't hate the place either.

When I comment on PG I try to give the good with the bad. A whole county can not be all bad. I believe when people tend to make blanket statements on a whole county that is when others will disagree with you. Like you said, they are your opinions but just be prepared for someone to take offense. It seems to be the name of the game whenever PG is mentioned. Either you love it or you hate it.
