Ok well not right now... but I thought this would be a good question for everyone in the DC forum since we all reside around here. why not!

I am trying to find a place that sells some good quality spirits. Not wine or beer, but that usually goes hand in hand in places like this so no harm done there.

I normally go down to Central Liquor which has done well for me finding obscure bottles but they are moving and have bare shelves, also A-1 is not too bad for selection also which is near the Lotus club on K ST but doesn't always have what I need.

So my question was does anyone know a really good liq store in DC that sells more variety and perhaps the occasional high end bottle? (or several!).

Right now I am trying to find some Sweet Vermouth called Antica, and some Pyrat "light" rum. Not having much luck.

I am thinking of trying some of the stores up on Wisconsin Ave in NW DC since they might cater to this more but I need to know a good one with good selection.

So if anyone has a suggestion for a good store let me know that's in DC.

I do know that NOVA has the giant warehouse called Total Wine, but I think you can only get spirits at ABC stores. Plus that's far out for me to go.

Later!

I've heard good things about Paul's (is it Paul's?) on Wisconsin, in Friendship Heights.

Calvert Woodley on Connecticut Ave near Van Ness.

Also Schneider's of Capitol Hill (Massachusetts Ave at 2nd St near Union Station)

I have a soft spot for Paul's as I grew up near there. Went there to help my late father lug home the party favors. Still feel kind of funny going in there- like I am still too young. Anyway, they have a pretty good selection.

Ditto Calvert Woodley. Not the biggest array, but some of the more knowlegable staff.

I heard that DC is the cheapest to buy liquor vs. MD/VA. Something about the taxes. Is this true?

If so, can anyone recommend the best discount liquor purveyor in DC. I once went to one of those megamarts in VA and it was like a Costco for booze. I mean wall to wall. I'm not a big drinker, but I'm going to start stocking up for the holidays.

Ace Beverage on New Mexico (only place I've been able to find Creme de Violette).
Pearson's on Wisconsin has some of the more unusual Vermouth-type spirits.

Ace has everything! It is a trek for us, but we make it every once in a while to stock up on the things that we can't find elsewhere.
