Hello! I'll be moving to DC, but don't know the neighborhoods well! I'm in my 30's, single, and female, and I want: a place accessible to Farraget train station, that has some QUIET neighborhoods/streets to live in apt, but is close to shops/rests/pubs so I can meet people...nice walking bits and trees too! Someplace with a bit of character. Plese send any ideas!
Farragut is on the red line, so that opens up the Connecticut Ave corridor as a possiblity - Woodley Park or Cleveland Park. Both are quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods with good access to Rock Creek Park, and lots of restaurants and cafes within walking distance. But they aren't cheap... if you are on a tight budget I might recommend some stops on the other end of the Red Line (Takoma Park, Brookland).

I lived in Van Ness which is close to the Woodley, Cleveland Park, Friendship Heights area. It sounds like what the OP is asking for
Google Maps are your friend.
Here's a map of the Van Ness area. You can click on the pictures to see what pictures people have taken. You can use Street View to walk around the neighborhoods. Connecticut and Wisconsin Ave's will have the shopping, restaurants, etc. Rock Creek park is beautiful. You can ride you bike into Farragut if you are so inclined. I used to ride from Van Ness into Du Pont Circle for work. It was a great ride in the mornings. I'd go past the back of the zoo and I'd see deer once or twice a week.
Metro - Home page is another must have link for anyone thinking about living in DC

Bronte, there are plenty of options open to you, but could you give us a rough idea of what your pain threshhold is for rent?
I work on Farragut Square, myself and it offers a great deal of flexibility. You have Red Line and Blue/Orange line access right at the park, which opens up most of the nice downtown neighborhoods to you.
I'd definitely recommend Woodley Park, some parts of it feel like you're not in the city and yet you're still within walking distance of Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan.
