Default Washington DC area hotels

Never been there, we are planning a trip and would like recommendations on hotels near the White House and the places to tour, we are considering: The Capital Hilton, The Grand Hyatt and the Omni Shoreham.
Is the location of these hotels safe, can you walk to the tour areas?
If you have a car, all hotels charge for parking, are taxis very expensive or is a better way to get around? My husband uses a scooter to get around, would that be a problem taking a taxi or the metro?
Thank you for any and all help you can give us.

All three of those hotels are in safe locations - if you mean the Capital Hilton on 16th street NW. I'd choose one of the first two, since they are closer to most attractions and amenities. Take the metro and walk. That's the easiest way to get around the city. I'm sure you'll enjoy your time in DC.

Grand Hyatt is probably a 10 minute walk to the whitehouse. The only problem with the area is that it's a business district, so at night, there's not much.

If money isn't an issue, the Sofitel is much closer to the whitehouse.

Omni Shoreham is in a great area but far from the whitehouse/smithsonian/mall...sidewalk cafe's and restaurants are nearby and about a couple blocks away from the national zoo...

I'm not sure about the metro or taxi's but if you call ahead they will be able to get you information...I definitely concur with the other posters and recommend the hilton if you need to be as close as possible.

What about the Hay Adams Hotel? You can see the roof of the White House from the outdoor dining deck/bar.

The other hotels the OP was considering sounded expensive too. Unless Hay Adams is even more expensive. I'm cheap so if I were visiting I'd stay at the Clarion in College Park, MD and just take the metro in!
