From my experience there it wasn't that impressive. Kinda overpriced. If I make another visit to DC I'll give it another try. A co-worker said that the food went down in quality as soon as Ben died.

From my experience, I don't think DC's known for any one particular food. I didn't realize the half smoke was so big, and I don't think I've ever had mambo sauce even though I've lived in the area for a decade now. I'll have to make a point to try both of these soon
That's not to say that DC has bad food though. It's a pretty good foodie town, especially if you toss in parts of NoVA like Old Town. If I had to pick the one thing about DC's food that stands our to me, I'd say it's the ethnical variety. Within a couple blocks you'll be able to find American, Indian, Thai, Malaysian, Greek, Spanish, Italian, French, Lebanese, Moroccan, Ethiopian, Peruvian, Mexican, Steak, Seafood, BBQ, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Brazilian Churriscarias, etc.. Many places will be mid to upscale, and some will be lower scale. The variety is fantastic. I'm more than happy just with my options in Old Town. As good as the places are, I always wind up trying something new during restaurant week (coming up ) instead of hitting up ones I already know because there's so many options!
I guess if I had to pick just one single food.... Maybe burgers at this point considering 5 Guys, Ray's Hellburger (never been there myself ), BGR and a couple other places with great burgers.

Ben's has really expanded and also seems to be catering to tourists as more, the place is really big compared to ten years ago.
Also you can get their dogs at the ball park!

It's not really known for food at all....Maybe half smokes and Ethiopian? For good food, go to NYC, SF, LA, Chicago, etc...

Right cause there is absolutely NO good places to eat in DC..
Sure those places culinarly wise have more options and some better places, and better access to better produce (hello.. California?), but DC has fantastic places to eat at.
