we had an early summer flare up, but it's been quiet lately

we're at 73, Baltimore's close to doubling us at 139, we were at 89 this time last year

when I moved here in 1997 from Boston, Boston had 43 for the year, DC 301, or 7 times as many, right now Boston's had 33 this year, so we're down to about 2x Boston's rate

west of the Anacostia, we've had 29 on a population of 450,000, so we're likely to come in just at 10 per 100,000 for the year, which would give us one of the lowest homicide rates for a densely populated city if the city line was at the Anacostia River

west of 16th, south of Mass Ave, which is nearly half the city, there have been just 2 homicides, both of which where just west of 16th in eastern Adams Morgan around Girard Street, so west of 17th and south of Mass there have been none, this is hard to find anywhere else - even in "safe" parts of San Francisco, Manhattan, and Boston

I don't recommend newcomers take it too easy in Dupont or Georgetown, still an urban area with potential issues, but remarkable progress nonetheless

Given DC's population of 600,000, then this means that the wards east of the Anacostia River are home to 150,000 residents and have had 44 homicides so far in 2010 (73-29), a rate of about 30 per 100,000. This is contrasted with the rate of about 6 per 100,000 year-to-date for the bulk of the city west of the Anacostia, which means that the wards east of the river have five times the homicide rate.

Cue those calling me a "racist" for doing this analysis in 3,2,1...

we've had this discussion here before, the homicide rate for many of the majority black neighborhoods has fallen dramatically

No one is calling you racist...just come out and say it...that the predominately poor black neighborhoods have the high murder counts...you would discover that most people have known this since ever...

a lot of the decline is in NE west of the river, along North Cap -as well as the Truxton Circle/Shaw area, NoMa area - in addition to new condos, I know the city or HUD, not to mention the police, were doing something about the Sursum Corda complex and adjacent neighborhood, which is remarkably at 0 for 2010

South of Rhode Island Ave, North of NY Ave, east of 9th NW, west of South Dakota Ave NE - makes a box if you look on a map - 15 homicides in 2005, 2 thus far in 2010

all of NW DC between H and U Street, 16 in 2005, just 3 so far this year

West of the Anacostia, South of Mass Ave - 14 in 2005, 0 so far in 2010, including all of SW DC and the Navy Yard/ballpark neighborhood

but even in the worst spots, there's improvement

SE DC across the river - 92 in 2005, 34 so far in 2010

this isn't happening in other cities, Richmond, Chicago, St. Louis, Boston, all flat or getting worse

interesting thing will be the completion of the H Street construction, because south of H St/Benning Road, west of the river, there's been just 1, but 8 north of H, south of NY Ave and east of North Cap, once that area gentrifies, could be a further drop, also have DHS bringing thousands of office workers into Anacostia

let's just hope we don't get a crazy new police chief or someone who reverses all the progress we've seen under Cathy Lanier

Actually, the police have been pretty strong under this chief. I wouldn't take credit away from them for at least part. New development in NE would be another factor. Be interesting to see stats on PG County just over the border. Just curious whether the crime's moved to he suburbs or whether it's truly disappearing.
