I know Bruce Majors made a blog ( Tea Party -- One Lump or Two?: So you are coming to the 8/28 Glenn Beck March on Washington? ) warning tourists to only use the red line between Shady Grove and Union station and not to use the Green/Yellow line and while I agree with him to a certain extent, some of the info is a little inaccurate and I would like go into the details about the other lines of the metro system and basically give you the real deal:

Points of Interests on the Green/Yellow line:

Downtown area:

Navy Yard - Nationals Ballpark

Waterfront - D.C. waterfront

L'Efant Plaza, Achieves - Tourist attractions (national mall, gov't buildings, museums)

Gallery Place - (Chinatown, Verizon Center, Restaurant, Movie Theater, Bowling Alley)

Mt. Vernon Square - Convention Center (But walking this neighborhood require some knowledge of DC and street smarts)

-------------------------------------------

Uptown DC to Greenbelt, MD

Shaw-Howard University - Howard University (You need a bit of knowledge about D.C. to visit this areas not really a tourist friendly area)

U street Cardozo - (Lincoln Theater, Ben's Chilli Bowl, African America Civil War Memorial. Generally a tourist friendly area)

Columbia Heights - (DC USA mall- Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc...not every much for a tourist to see also this area is very block to block crime wise)

Georgia Ave/Petworth to PG plaza are either residential areas or aren't tourist friendly.

College Park (University of Maryland, Airpark)

Greenbelt (residential area moslty. However there is a metrobus (#B30) that offers service to BWI airport.

------------------------

Points of Interests on the Green/Yellow line (cont):

Arlington to Alexandria (Yellow Line/Blue Line):

Pentagon station: (The Pentagon, Airforce Memorial)

Pentagon City: (Centre at Pentagon city shopping mall, very tourist friendly area)

Crystal City: (Mostly residential, Crystal city underground mall, tourist friendly)

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport: (Airport)

Braddock Road and King street stations: (Oldtown Alexandria, very tourist friendly, worth visiting)

Eisenhower Ave: (Nothing much here really except hotels, restaurants, and a movie theater)

Huntington: (Residential area, if you stay at a hotel or motel on Richmond Highway instead of driving into the city you should drive to the station and park there and take the train into the city).

---------------------------

Points of Interests on the Red line (beyond Union Station going towards Glenmont:

New York Ave to Rhode Island Ave is pretty much commercial/residential. Nothing much to see here.

Brookland: (Catholic University of America)

Ft. Totten to Takoma is mostly residential

Silver Spring - (Commercial/Residential area, restaurants, movie theater, shopping mall. worth visiting)

Forest Glen to Glenmont (Mostly residential, theres a shopping mall at Wheaton but its not tourist friendly and you'll probably get lost)

---------------------------------

Points of Interests on Blue/Orange line beyond Eastern Market:

Potomac Ave: (still apart of Capitol Hill, residential/commercial area)

Stadium Armory: (the edge of Capitol Hill, RFK stadium, DC armory/National Guard HQ is nearby. worth visiting but wouldn't venture too far away from the station.)
----------------------

Orange line stops beyond Stadium Armory:
Minnesota Ave (Orange line): (Residential/Commercial, no landmarks nearby nor tourist friendly at all.)

Deanwood (Orange line): (Residential/Industrial area. D.C. Aquatic Gardens is nearby, however the area is rough and you'll have to walk through housing projects to get to it, best not to even bother unless you driving and KNOW where your going)

Cheverly to Landover (Orange line): (Residential/Industrial areas, nothing to see here.)

New Carrollton (Orange line): (Residential/Commercial/Industrial area. Connections to Greyhound, MARC trains, and Amtrak here)

------------------------

Blue line stops beyond Stadium Armory:

Benning Road to Addison Road/Seat Pleasant: (Commercial/Residential areas, area is rough not tourist friendly at all).

Morgan Blvd: (Residential area, Fedex Field [Redskins stadium] is nearby)

Largo Town Center: (Commercial area, shopping town center next to the station.)

Hope you find this info helpful!!

Just remember to stand on the right of the escalators if they actually are working.

I also forgot to add that the National Shrine is accessible at Brookland station on the red line as well.

Some D.C. area landmarks aren't directly served by a metro line so you'd have to take a bus to get to the, from the nearest station.

Examples of these would be:

-National Cathedral (catch the #31, 32, or 36 from Foggy Bottom-GWU station on the blue/orange lines or from Tenlytown station on the red line)

-National Harbor (catch the #NH1 metrobus from Branch Ave station on the southern terminus on the green line. this the only stop on the green line beyond Navy yard that is safe for tourists and all you'll be doing here is waiting for the bus). The National Harbor worth very much a visit, here goes more info about it:

International Spy Museum: 800 F St NW
Crime and Punishment Museum: 575 7th Street Northwest
(Both are near the Gallery Place metro, Green/Yellow/Red lines)

National Firearms Museum: 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA‎
Manassas National Battlefield: 6511 Sudley Road, Manassas, VA
