I ask because this topic has been brought up many times in the general US forum, so I'd like to ask fellow D.C. residents the same question, or people that have worked or used to live in D.C.

D.C. seems neutral to me. NW seems more northern as well as most of N.E.
Most of Southeast and some of Northeast (Far Northeast) east of the river seems more southern. Southwest is southern, but not 100% it has northern aspects.

Overall I don't think the D.C. area should be lumped in with the rest of the south. The pace of life is too fast for it to be southern.

Neutral or Northern. Definitely not Southern, most places don't even serve sweet tea

Probably the only southern thing about the DC area is that it's more county-centric than city- and town-centric.

D.C. is not the south. VA isn't the real south either.

VA seems more Appalachian.

Depends which part of VA you're talking about. There are part of VA that are very southern.

Kennedy put it best - DC "is a town of Northern charm and Southern efficiency".

I've always said the same of Northern Virginia: "Southern Living with Northern Taxes." Past Fairfax County, you'll get in Good 'ol Boy country real quick now.
Regarding the OP's question: Being so close to the Mason-Dixon line, D.C. is a mix of both Northern and Southern sub-cultures. For example, the pace of life here is definitely northern, while our race relations is definitely (unfortunately) southern.

Eh I was in ATL once and race relations didn't seem that bad, granted I was only there for a few days. I heard if you want bad race relations one should pay a visit to Chicago or Boston.

I've heard things about those cities, especially Chicago.
