Thanks for the input! I will continue my search of Alexandria (fairfax county) with all this in mind. I can't wait to move east and experience the good, bad, and ugly for myself. =)

I've read some horrible reviews of Alexandria apts based on our budget. So if its ok, can you tell me the name of the apt where your friend lives? We are two 20somethings looking for an SAFE apt in Alexandria for under 1K. 950/month sounds like a sweet deal. I know 1K is a major stretch for a safe area but its temporary and we will upgrade in a few months.

Thanks!
He lives in Foxchase which is about half a mile off of Duke Street in the West End. They're a sea of low-slung three-story apartments clustered around N. Jordan, within easy walking distance to bus stops and to a large strip mall where there is a Harris Teeter grocery store amongst other places. You're about five minutes from Landmark Mall and about 5-10 minutes from Old Town Alexandria. His apartment is nothing spectacular, nothing new and fancy and no marble counter tops and stainless steel appliances, but it's perfectly doable and has everything you'd want and need in it, and the community is pretty safe. A higher percentage of Alexandria's crime does occur in the West End, so you do of course have to be mindful of your surroundings, especially at night, but it's by no means a dangerous community.
