DC, Miami, Las Vegas, Chicago
Hi,
I am graduating soon from graduate school and my focus on the job search has been finding an organization that I would like to work for (I am going into hospital administration). Now I am turning my focus to the actual city. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on which city is better for a 25 single woman to live: DC, Miami, Las Vegas, or Chicago? Thanks for your help!

The DC Metro area is an excellent area for minorities and women in success and employment. Vegas I'd just continue visiting...Miami isn't bad...but it's never really been known as an employment hub, and Chicago would be the another place you should consider. However, cost of living in DC and Chicago isn't cheap. Have you considered Boston? Boston is a medical mecca!! The biggest downfall to your profession is the limited availability of work in this field.

Okay, my opinion
DC--great nightlife and tons of educated folks. The question is never "Did you graduate from college" but "Where did you graduate from college". Everybody is degree'd up. Housing is expensive but Hospital Admin pays pretty descent. Right now is a good time to live in the DC/Baltimore region with the growth and all and federal govt.
Vegas--Another great area and we already know about nightlife. Only concern is rising crime and illegals, diversity in economy outside of entertainment industry.
Chicago--Man I have never heard a bad thing about Chicago from anybody. Yes people complain about the snow and the wind but I have never heard anybody complain about Chi-town and everybody seems to love it. So much to do with a midwest state of mind. Tons of sports teams and lots of interesting neighborhoods. Will also be alot of opportunity for you career wise...
Miami--great area but they let what is one of the key problems with immigrants coming from latin speaking countries by not adopting english. You will have to learn spanish and be bi-lingual for employement. Alot of people leave for this reason because they are not bi-lingual and have a hard time finding work. But its a beautiful area with great weather all though crime can be kind of crazy.
Me personally, considering being single, wanting to date and hang out you can't go wrong with Chicago or DC especially when you consider all the professional opportunities and networks/associations/conferences you can attend right in the city.....Plus Dc is like 6 hours from Boston, 4 from NY, 2 from Philly and 4 from Charlotte/Charlottesvile/ 2 hrs from Atlantic City. So alot of other ciities you can hangout at on the weekends or look for new professional opportunities...

I think chicago probably is the most well rounded choice, it has a bit of everything. DC is a fun place for young professional singles, but the city has a certain "personality" that either you like or don't (something like a work-a-holic, elitist east coast thing, still not really sure myself).

Definitely Chicago. I lived there as well. Its a better choice for all the standard reasons but particularly for young single women. Within the professional demographic in DC, there are seven women for every one man! Its heaven for men.

7 women for every man? I've been in DC the last 3 months and it seems pretty even to me.

I've read that twice but I don't remember where and I can't find the statistic on the internet. I distinctly remember one of the sources was from some sort of official census publication. At any rate, its common knowledge. My husband and all of his friends acknowleged being able to have higher standards here and all of my girlfriends have certainly had to lower theirs. Another blogger noticed the same phenomenon:

The ratio is definately up in the air. It's sort of heaven for men but only the wealthy ones. Night life is defininately top notch....as one can have several options; Northern VA, DC, and perhaps MD depending on your preference. I'm only about 7-8 miles from Gtown but i can't stand DC as a whole. Can't have no fun without spending over $ 100. As a matter of fact, each time i have been to DC i spent over $ 120. Arlington is a perfect sub.....the ratio is like 3:9 there which mathematically translates to 1:3
