My wife and I are thinking of relocating to DC metro area. We have a 2 year old and are looking for the best places to live for a young family. I will probably be working in downtown DC but my company has offices in Maryland and VA so may have options to work there as well. Guess my question is where can we live that is close to DC, Maryland, & VA but affordable rent ($2,000)....and a decent place to leave.

Look in the Cleveland Park area of NW DC. You'll definitely be able to find a two bedroom apartment for that price or less.

I presently work in DC but reside in Fairfax County, VA. Northern, VA is very family oriented, and there's so many great housing options. Also, the crime tends to be far lower than in DC and MD.

We've heard VA and MD are both great. We are both born and raised new Yorkers and are a little nervous about moving. what do you think is the best and worst about living in DMV? Nervous but excited.

Well, as mentioned on the other thread, the worst part is the radio stations, although if you get Sirius XM you'll be able to listen to Stern. And the traffic is not so good. The best part is being able to rub shoulders with congressmen, lawyers, and other power people on a regular basis.

Worst or set backs:
-High crime areas in Far NE and SE D.C., PG county MD as well as some parts of NW DC. But you should be able to avoid those areas easily. NW DC between 16th street and North Capitol is very block to block, meaning some blocks are better then others. In NE and SE you'll find entire areas that are ghetto, mostly in Wards 7 and 8 EAST of the Anacostia river.

-Public Transit isn't 24/7 here. The subway (metrorail) here has certain hours of operation:

Sunday: 7am-Midnight (17 hours of straight service)
Monday-Thursday: 5am-midnight (19 hours of straight service)
Friday: 5am-3am (22 hours of straight service)
Saturday: 7am-3am (20 hours of straight service)

Buses on main corridors in D.C. operate near 24/7 service, especially along Georgia Ave (70), 16th street NW (S2,S4), H street NW-NE/Benning Road NE (X2), and some of the crosstown bus routes like the 90, 92, 93 line.

Best or positive:

The area of DC between 16th street NW and the Anacostia river are generally upper middle and lower middle class with some poor areas. This includes Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan, Mt Pleasant, Petworth, Brightwood, Park View, U street, Shaw, Logan Circle, Florida Park, Bloomingdale, Eckington, Capitol Hill, Trinidad, H street, and Rosedale.

To give you a comparison, Wards 7 and 8 D.C. is like North Brooklyn (East New York, Brownsville, Canarsie, Bed-stuy) mixed with the south Bronx (Mott Haven). Shaw is like Harlem.
Upper NW is like a mix between the upper west side and Bensonhurst. A lot of PG county is like Yonkers.
