Plenty of people in their 30's here are well above 100k. Depends on profession. Honestly, you need about atleast 75k to live good in the city.

I am 26, my salary right now is 62k. I am a GS-11 with the Feds.

Here some figures of people I know:

27/M - Software Developer - NOT cleared, non government. 85K
30/F - Private School Teacher. 40K
28/M - Systems Engineer - Cleared. 180K
32/F - IT - Cleared. 75K

So hopefully that helps.

all depends on your niche/profession/skill set

i have 3 jobs. 9 to 5 i'm an analyst (comm) and i make about 60k for that
5 to 9 i teach (university) and i make about 40k for that
in my spare time (weekends) i run a website that i probably pull in 20k for annually, really passive income.
btw, i'm 30.
i never viewed having 1 job as my sole source of income. i think that's a relic of my parents time. chances of 1 person staying with 1 job for 30 years are slim now days (if you aren't employed with some sort of government, fed, state, local, etc.)
my view has always been to have multiple sources of income just in case "something" happens. i got downsized a few years ago from a really good paying job and learned my lesson the hard way.

so to answer your question, a suitable salary for someone under 35 in dc is rather broad. depends on your lifestyle, skills, and professional aspirations. my ultimate goal is to work for myself so maybe i'm a bit different.

i've seen gs-5/7's my age who make 38-45k a year, i've seen teachers who make 45k a year, i've seen cops who make 55k a year, and i've seen lawyers who make 45k and 145k a year. all were under 35.

It all depends on the lifestyle you want. I am single (25) and don't want roommates, which means that even though I make ~68K I need to watch my budget closely...doesn't mean I can't go out to happy hour, but just means I can't buy my lunch out every day....So I wouldn't say mine is a "good" salary for the area, but its "comfortable." Now, if I chose to live with roommates, live outside the beltway, etc. it would be a great salary...

Exactly. There are plenty who live on much less than some people think. Not everyone can pull in six figures. All of those teachers, cops, firemen, etc all make far less than that.
