Can anyone help me in finding a place in DC which makes/sells haggis. I have wanted to try it for so long but not to be! Are there any scots lurking around here who can help me taste the iconic dish?
There's a few places that sell it (I don't know the exact ones, but I think there's a new store in Old Town Alexandria), but from what I understand it's all the same brand and not that good. My friend likes to celebrate Burns Night and bought one a few years ago, but she was extremely disappointed. The meat is too finely ground (more like a paste) and they're heavy on the liver. I didn't think it was that bad, but when they described how it's supposed to be I can see why the real thing is better.
If you'd want it to be authentic, your best bet might be to find a good butcher who will grind it up for you and stuff it in the casing (stomach). You could try the butchers at Eastern Market, I know they make sausage so they'd at least have the capability.
FYI: I tried it while visiting Edinburgh. Its not horrid, but it ain't gonna replace buffalo wings at gametime.
