I think this might be the root of your issue - you're just not accustomed to the vibe / culture / energy of Metro. I've ridden NYC's subway plenty of times in the middle of the night and, frankly, it can be far more desolate.

I just think it's a matter of switching from car-culture over to transit culture. That said, Takoma isn't the easiest place to go carless. I'm not sure the folks who ride Metro late at night are worthy of a "YIKES!". Most are just drunk young people and some service-industry workers. Probably the safest group you could be around.

If I'm not mistaken, those packs of teenagers fighting usually happen during the afternoon when school lets out. I've never seen them around at 2 am, myself.

Really? Actually 2:00 am on a Friday night is a fine night to ride the metro. I was by myself at 2:00 am last Friday night. There was a weird foreign guy making comments but I just moved slightly to the left and it was cool.

Ugh. Where do you plan on partying at? Capitol Heights? The vast majority of the metro system is safe, minus a few kids up to no good at a few stations. If you see a bunch of rowdy kids yelling and being a nuisance, simply turn around and avoid them. Want to take a short cut through a dark alley? Don't. Don't walk around late at night with your ipod on or yabbing on your self phone while holding 12 shopping bags and not paying attention to your surroundings. If some crazy guy wants to talk to you, don't give them the time of day. It's not that hard people. Whatever you do, just act like you know what you are doing and where you are going. Don't give anyone an opportunity to make you a victim.Because to be honest, you just seem like damsel in distress. I'm a single guy, and when I ride the metro home late at night and see something fishy, I just avoid them. One time, I saw a bunch of punk kids fighting each other on a train. Guess what? I moved trains. I would've reported them if I wasn't so horny to get back home. This is not rocket science. And unless you plan on going out in strange neighborhoods late at night, there is no reason to be so scared. Use caution, but don't walk the streets looking like a lost 12 yr old girl and maybe people won't bother you. Nuff said!

I never said anything about being drunk. People can go out without getting drunk.

Whenever I don't want to take the Metro home, I just cab. Really, it's not that big of a deal. For me it's not really the Metro itself, but the walk home from the Metro. While it's fairly safe, it can be desolate around here (especially from L'Enfant) and I just get uncomfortable. Also, after about 11 or so I start getting lazy and the 15-minute cab is too tempting.

If you truly feel uncomfortable, go the cab route. Are you uncomfortable on the entire system, or just in certain areas? If it's only certain areas, ride the metro towards home, get off at a popular stop, and cab from there.
