Hello everyone! Would anyone be able to give me some info about where to live in the city if I'm working in Anacostia? My future roommate will be attending GW for grad school and working at Catholic U. I'm thinking about the SW Waterfront, Columbia Heights, Gallery Place/Chinatown, and Eastern Market. Anyone know about the safety of these areas, fun things to do, etc.? My roommate is concerned Waterfront might not have enough fun nightlife, shopping, restaurants etc.- but I found a great apt. right next to the metro there. Basically, where could we live that's a reasonable commute for both us to our work/school and safe- we are both 23, single females. Thank you!

I live in SW Waterfront. Your roommate is right that there isn't much to do there. There is a grocery store and a drug store right by the metro, but it isn't a hang-out place with much nightlife. Columbia Heights would be a longer commute for you but there is much more to do in the area. Gallery Place/Chinatown has a lot of nightlife/restaurants but is very expensive. Eastern Market is a good mix of quiet/residential yet still has some bars/restaurants. I think that Waterfront is fine is you're only going to be going out on the weekends and will to take the metro when you go out but if you're going to be going out everyday and want to live in the middle of it all, it definitely isn't what you're looking for. Personally I found it a little hard to get used to Waterfront (given the lack of things to do within immediate walking distance) even though I'm not even someone who goes out all that much.
I think you'd be better off in Chinatown. It puts you at a transfer point for the lines going to Anacostia and Catholic and one stop away from Metro Center to take you to GWU. You've got tons of restaurants there, close to nightlife, etc. a bit pricey but if your budget allows then I think it would be perfect for you

I agree with the above. I am a country boy so SW was a great fit for me.
Gallery Place/Chinatown has lots of nightlight and will be walking to distance to every metro line in DC, which will help with your commute to Anacostia on the Green Line, and your roommates commute to CUA on the Red Line and GW on the Orange Line.
I do find Chinatown's nightlife to be pretty generic and overly touristy though. However, since you'd be close to the metro you're just a short ride from U-Street, Dupont, Adams Morgan, or Eastern Market.
