Our model implies that the much higher welfare participation rates for Hispanic and, especially, black women can be explained almost entirely by the worse labor market and marriage market opportunities that they face."

There are differences between all American dialects, yet all are mutually intelligible. That African-American English specifically possesses numerous commonalities (lexical and syntactical) with Southern American English, yet the latter is the not cause for negative discrimination to the same degree, is evidence of the race-based discrimination against African-Americans.

But you don't see poor southern whites (aka rednecks, I'm an equal opporunity offender) trying to allow school sytems to accept their english as a legitimate. Only poor (and rich alike) blacks are trying to push Ebonics in school. Nomesayin dawg???

Seriously, YAC banned me (Jesco) for an unpopular opinion. No cursing, no racist terms, just an unpopular opinion.

Not me. I am familiar with the victim narrative and its supporters and it does not intimidate me at all. There are the usual kind of garbled statements, always moving subtly off target, I believe I mentioned this problem earlier. Unfortunately, it is certainly keeping other people in their places. That would be the "victims," who could use some tough love and standards.

A (black) businesswoman with whom we are friendly has struggled, hiring locals. She has suffered their non-existent work ethic, senses of entitlement, inappropriate dress, unacceptable treatment of the customers she needs for her business to survive. She has two accurate words for such people and one of them is ... "hoodrat." I will not mention the other.

Be advised of a different story, everyone. My significant other, in one of the worst-hit industries in the economic downturn, weathered, over the course of three years, four company closings and subsequent lay-offs. Each time, being employed again within two months, maximum. Dressed appropriately, speaking proper english, arriving on time. Remains employed. A definitively BLACK person.

So there it is.

If you live in an area where there is a similar problem in the neighborhood, find out where the children live and contact their landlord, by phone and then in writing. You could also post about your experiences on a blog like everyblock.com, being specific about locations and what happened. This will protect others and have a broader purpose - identifying unacceptable behavior. In Harlem there is an interest in keeping quality of life problems and crime on the quiet side, so the public discussions help.
Or just vote with your wallet and live somewhere with people who actually care about their communities.

I should play a drinking game with the number of times my name's mentioned in threads I'm not even in. I've explained many times to young jmusmc the difference between my actual stance about his characterization of race and his dogged persistence that I'm some sort of hyper pc police.

It's clear he has created a myth and will not be evolving his thinking to match my far more reasonable stance that doesn't include yelling "rayyyyyyycist" every time. So be it. If he can't differentiate between holding people accountable for inappropriate behaviors and making blanket statements, that's not on me. The race issue is far from, pardon the expression, as black and white as he suggests.
