30 to 45 minutes means you'll want to be closer in rather than not, especially driving. Even you were close in on the Virginia side (say Arlington, maybe the Clarendon or Ballston area) at the height of rush hour, getting across the bridges and through downtown to reach Gallaudet will probably be within that range, but much further out and it'll probably be longer. The Maryland suburbs you listed are probably going to be a similarly at the long end of that commute range. You might want to look toward Silver Spring or the Shepherd Park neighborhood of DC (I know you said you didn't want to be in DC proper, but ...) from there you'd have multiple surface street options to get over to Ivy City as well as easy access (by car or transit) into the city. One thing about Silver Spring, it's not an incorporated community, so there is a pretty wide area that's labeled "Silver Spring" and it varies from very suburban, single family homes to more urban and walkable and some bits are going to yield a better commute than others.

I don't disagree, but the OP's stated that he prefers not to live in Prince George's ... otherwise, I'd suggest Hyattsville or College Park for an easy commute down Bladensburg Road (the crossing pg New York Ave. would be the only big choke point).

OK. I just don't know why someone wouldn't mind living in Ivy City but objects to PG.

OP can speak for himself as to the whys, but I thought he'd said he's working in Ivy City, but doesn't want to live in Prince Geroge's or in DC proper ...

I'm not criticizing you (I never read your post). I just don't understand why they want to live so far away from Ivy City.

Sorry to return to this so late. As a single man, living IN the city is reasonable. You might be living in more transitional quarters, but you will be in the middle of LIFE. I loved living in the city, and there is nothing that the suburbs could have offered me that would have made commuting worth it. Life is rich in the city, and you don't have to move into an expensive place.

I don't work at Gallaudet anymore, but I can highly recommend Silver Spring or Takoma Park. Both are fairly easy commutes to Gallaudet. Several people who work there recommend those two areas. You want to drive, but the Red line Metro goes through both and takes you to the New York Ave / Gallaudet station. It's a 4 or 5 block walk down M street to Gallaudet. It's a nice option if you need it. If you drive, Blair rd to N. Capitol st is an easy drive.

I just want to thank everyone for sharing their advice with me about relocation to Washington, D.C. for new job at Gallaudet University.

I've found a perfect place in the city, which is a townhouse not too far from DuPont Circle. It's an easy drive down CT Ave., RI Ave., then FL Ave. to Gallaudet U.

Have Happy Holidays!

30-45 minutes from Virginia to NE DC is next to impossible. Maybe if you left at 4am everyday and went home at 9p.

I dont think you realize how bad DC traffic is. Tied with Chicago for worst in the nation. It can take 20-30 minutes to go one mile, and the interstates often become bumper to bumper stop go traffic. In my opinion Virginia next to Maryland and DC has the worst traffic in the district.

So if you are willing to have an hour and a half commute one way or around 3 hours a day total go live in Virginia.
