DC would be way better off if it did not have its archaic height restrictions on buildings. I understand they want the Washington Monument to stand out but it is a leading cause of the horrible traffic and will get worse once DC is filled to its capacity. I'd support lifting it outside a general zone surrounding the Washington Monument. I understand how difficult it would be since its a federal law passed by Congress and DC has no Congressional representation, but ideally would you support repeal of the law?

Part of me says yes because it makes sense to build up and not out.

Part of me says no because I think one of the unique things about DC is that it doesn't have giant skyscrapers everywhere.

DC needs to attract more business to the area so I vote yes. There is already a housing shortage and real estate prices in DC are comparable to NYC. Make more skyscrapers so that folks can live easier.

The height restriction is NOT the cause of the bad traffic here. I see no evidence for that claim.

Obviously it does. DC's low density nature in its core means housing is much more limited than a normal city its geographic size and lots of people get priced out. They have to live in the suburbs and commute by car to either their workplace or a Metro stop. Imagine if people could live in and commute to skyscrapers in Metro Center or Chinatown. You'd have far less cars on the road.

I think what you're trying to say is that if we add skyscrapers, DC would keep all it's jobs and operations in the core and wouldn't have to go out to MD or VA (which they've been doing) where the current traffic issue is becoming widespread in MD and VA.

I agree with this. Commuting adds to stress which is what takes away from happiness this is part of the reason why DC is so transient and loses so many people and IP to other cities. There is the thread on if DC can become the next NYC, not a chance until core issues like this are changed.

Just make it so that there are no skyscrapers around the national mall area, but why not in NW and NE......

If skyscrapers were built in D.C., guess what al-Qaueda's next target would be.

How is NYC managing then, since they are rebuilding the towers?

How about lifting the height restriction to making buildings in DC no taller than the National Monument within a 500 ft radius? Currently, it's only restricted to the Capitol. I would be ok with that.
