That's truly ashame how you feel about DC. I lived in DC for a time and I think I felt the same way you did so that's why I left the area in the first place. However, I needed a break...an 8 year break!...I'm excited to be moving back to the area shortly. I think if you are really tired of the people in DC...see if you can get away for awhile and work somewhere else in the country...like an internship or something?..
I definitely think DC is what you make of it. I had some personal things going on at the time and I just could not stay there anymore but now being older and wiser I'm a lot more able to tolerate DC and make it work. I'm so grateful to have lived in in other parts of the country because I've truly grown up and am able to deal with a lot more (i.e., the snootyness, being overly materialistic and superficial, etc.)...I definitely don't disagree with some of the comments posted here on the thread because DC is one big melting pot of people from all walks and backgrounds...yeah the first thing people ask you is "where do you work?" or "where did you go to school?"...but that's good because then you can fiind out who your real friends are...trust me...been down that road before...
But if you're still down about DC...just think about the other parts of the country where people have no jobs at all...they wish they had your problem...not liking the people in the area or having to deal with traffic...etc...they are grateful just to have a job period!...they'll walk to work if they had to in order to support their family...it's hard to see that problem living in DC because everything there is so stable...and people take their jobs and opportunities for granted....but try walking in someone else's shoes for a day...you may just have a change of heart...
Having lived in the DC area now for 10 years, I have to agree with the majority of these comments that the general attitude here is simply awful. Lot of unwarranted self-importance, people out of touch with the rest of the country. Maybe it's the government prevalence, who knows... Mean-spirited folk running around, miserable automoton faces on the Metro! Dated racial issues, separated neighborhoods with some apparently still feeling entitled?! Really bad food, no fashion sense whatsoever.
Frank Rich was right - NY was to be the capital but here we are...
Upshot: There are jobs here. It's because DC is the seat of government. Looks like that concept worked against the area - it is most unrepresentative of the greatness of America. Come for a visit - see the monuments, museums, White House, and move on... this is no place to LIVE.

Was it really necessary to resurrect this thread which was dormant for 6 months, and have it be your first post on this board at that???? And buy into every major generalization, some of which are outdated?
I will steadfastly stand by my assertion that most people who only see what you claim generally have issues of their own.
I do think the real estate is drastically overpriced in DC. In other ares that are priced similar, you could get 10x better weather, better atmosphere, and if you like, nice beaches. In DC, you get an extremely high cost of living coupled with crappy weather, no 2nd amendment rights (haha), and questionable scenery.
I have friends that seem to like it, but you could live in Santa Monica for the same price. Unless your job requires you to go to DC, I would never pay the real estate prices there.
Why bother responding to someone with a grand total of a single post under his/her moniker who resuscitated a two year old thread to make a ridiculous comment?

Well, that's not so true anymore, but regardless, that would actually be a MAJOR plus for me.
And no scenery? This city may have its faults, but it's a very pretty place. And that includes both the buildings and the parkland. DC is one of the prettiest cities in the country, IMO.
I love how these people are unhappy and extrapolate that everyone should be miserable in DC. This new poster was just looking for an excuse to vent.
In reality, if you live in the city and depend on Metro the quality of life can be extraordinary. I lived other places in the US and miss people caring what you do for 9 hours of your day. Why shouldn't it matter what you do for a living? It says a lot about who you are.
It's a great city and I'm pretty sure that if your idea of a great life is in a California beach town, then DC isn't for you. Doesn't mean one of the most vibrant cities in the country is bad.
mmmm... why so defensive? This is not an "I love DC" forum - it's the City Data forum, positive and negative opinions are equally valid. You love DC, I don't. You write your opinions, I write mine. I owe you nothing. Intolerance of others' opinions = bad sign!
So anyway, as I was saying: newcomers interested in the general atmosphere of this area, caveat emptor... my experience is that the town gets a major thumbs-down. This mostly emanates from a crass, bad attitude among people here that I''ve found unusually pervasive for a medium-sized town. Not much redeeming to counter that major problem... Well I'm glad that the original poster began this thread - as you can see many agreed with him - the town is simply soul-less. Take care now.
