I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to get from the Ward Circle area of NW DC to I-95 South in Virginia and back. I have taken Massachusetts Ave to Rock Creek Parkway, but I won't usually be travelling with the one way flow, so this route would only work for me sometimes. Any suggestions?

I would do this: Nebraska Ave to Arizona to Canal Rd., cross the Chain Bridge. At the light go straight. It will curve to the left and go uphill. After the curve to the right, take the exit for Military Rd. At the stop sign go straight, cross the bridge, and turn left on Military Rd. Take it all the way to its end (it changes to Nellie Custis Rd at a curve). Take Nellie Custis to Lorcom Lane and turn left. Follow that to it's end and go left on Spout Run. That will merge in the George Washington Parkway which you can take to 395 south. The description makes it seem complicated, but it really isn't. Military Rd has only one light between where you get on it and Lorcom. I'm assuming the times you would travel are not regular rush times. Maybe someone has a better way, but this is probably the way I would go.

I would be coming in during the early evening rush, about 4:30.

I hope I understand correctly. What's making me uncertain is the use of "coming in". I think of coming in as going to DC, not outbound. If inbound to Ward circle, Rock Creek Parkway would probably be better at that time than my route. I'm not sure.
