Being that I'd love to live in DC someday, I'm definitely trying to take on some Redskins love...
However, there still seems to be some political issue about 'racism' and 'Redkins'... if it's an appropriate mascot name/image or not.
Where do the rest of you fit into this? Since you've probably read a lot more in the Washington metro on this, has there been many studies on Native Americans and their viewpoints on it as well?
What's your personal take...'Redskins' as a name/mascot...racist or not racist?
It's definitely a racist name but not much you can do about it, people are kind of indifferent toward racist things as long as there's "tradition" behind it. Kinda like how they still make Aunt Jemima syrup even though today no one would create a new product with a black mammy as its mascot.
I can see why it could be seen as an issue. I'm sure no one would like yellow skins, or black skins, and then have a face for it. Me personally, I don't care (despite being a quarter "Native American") But until a band of Native Americans start fighting it...it's obviously not a big deal.
Even though the 'Redskins' is improper on its surface, it's clear that the name isn't meant to debase or belittle a race, but to lend the organization an image of the strengths of the Native American people and their culture.
Sure it's an inappropriate term from a less racially sensitive time, but the intent is complimentary, not derogatory, so I think it gets a pass.
Oh, it's definitely a racist name leftover from the days when they had a racist owner, George Preston Marshall. It's such an antiquated slur though that most people don't seem too offended by it anymore though. There have been some legal efforts to change the name too, but obviously they haven't gone anywhere.
some people call them the "hailskins" (well at least on bumper stickers, never heart it in conversation), but lots of people just call them the "skins".
I don't think anyone would pick that name today, but most people aren't that concerned about it. Some native americans did make a fuss.
it is racist but even some natives
americans are still fans of the
team, believe it or not.
they're not also called hogs
for nothing either i guess lol..
get my drift?
