My husband is just finishing ground school (to be a pilot) and when he finishes he will most likely be sent to DC. I'm not too thrilled about that because we are so broke. We have 2 toddlers and need a 3 bedroom, 2 bath rental for only $750-800/month (I know...good luck!). He also has to be within an hour commute of the airport for when he is on reserve. A safe, kid friendly neighborhood is extremely important. Our other option is for me and our kids to live with his parents (yuck!) for a few months until he is sent somewhere more affordable. I've never been to DC and have no idea what suburbs I should start looking in that are only an hour from the international airport. Thanks!

i think youll have to take the parents up on the offer. $750 wont get a safe one bed apt in this area.

Unfortunately, it looks like you will indeed have to live with his parents. I'd hate to be so absolute, but really, the average ONE bedroom apartment in the area (and I'm talking in the suburbs far out from DC) goes for $1000/month. You can find quite a few under that amount, and maybe some as low as $800, in really rough apartment complexes; but again, these are one bedrooms.

I might have missed it but which airport? DC has 3 big ones--National, Dulles and BWI and one big military one, Andrews.

It's expensive here. I'm not clear because you didn't say which airport, but if you can deal with the parents for a few months I would take it. At the least you will save a bundle, have a support system while new to a busy metro area (and some kid-help?), and, if you end up staying longer, you will have bought some time to look at some options.

Yea, that ain't happening.

Maybe if you live 1 hour directly West of Dulles international air port, i.e. in West Virginia lol.

For example I live 15 miles from D.C. and my rent is $2,000 a month for a townhouse.
