Good afternoon. I am looking for some advice/guidance/suggestions on our upcoming move. I am getting orders to the DC area late this summer. My husband is starting to look for a job in the area as well. We have 2 children that will be going into 3rd and 6th grade this fall (and a baby on the way!) I am hoping for some help on finding the best area to live. We are looking to rent a SFH within 40(ish) miles of the Pentagon. Something very important to us is a location with no crime and good schools. People have suggested we live in VA or MD. I'm looking for a starting point to research homes for rent and schools. In terms of rent, we'd be looking for a home for about $2500/month or less.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

go to the NoVa forum. you can certainly find a 3br house in one of the several counties with good school districts (schools are by county here) within 20 miles or less for that price. Though 20 miles will take longer to commute than you might be thinking

The only reason to consider someplace other than NoVa would be if your husband gets a job in maryland.

edit - i note a 3rd kid on the way - looking for 4BR will limit things a bit, but should still be doable.

brooklynborndad is right, you are going to get great help from the regulars at the Northern Virginia forum if you post your question there.

This forum is more geared for DC the city itself.
