Gettysburg is nice, and Antietam and Harpers Ferry are near as well if you are heading that direction.

I also think Annapolis is nice, if you are going slightly the other way. You might even find some cheaper places out there (only about a 25 minute drive to the metro station). There are also some places as expensive as in DC. However, in Annapolis you could take a commuter bus into DC and back again at the end of the evening.

Hi,

One of the sites for Civil War history is Manassas, VA. I've also been to a museum down 81S. Help, I'll try to remember where, but it was at least 2 hours outside of DC.

Some areas where I would drive ...

o Great Falls Park (actually "suburban" Virginia)
o Washington, VA (there is a really acclaimed, really $ restaurant called The Inn at Little Washington). In any case, the drive down there is so nice and the "Inn" has a gift shop where you can browse. And there are other little quaint towns to visit.
o Shenandoah Valley - Skyline Drive - gorgeous.

Sorry I only know VA, not MD ...
