Hey guys.. When are these trains gonna be operational? And what the friggin' Hell happened to 2000 through 6000? Cause, the current Metro trains are Series 1000!!! That means these trains are around 6 generations out of date.

Current Metro trains are numbered 1000s through 6000s. I'm surprised you haven't noticed the differences between these six generations: the 1000s and 4000s have the orange interiors, for instance, while the others have the "red, white, and blue" interiors. The relatively new 6000s have lots more standing space.

The 7000s go into service when the Silver Line opens later this year.

You serious? I do notice the different colors in the seats... But if that's a 6000 with the black non-carpet floors... That's not much of an improvement going from 1000 to 6000 over the years.

The 7000 looks like a huge jump from the piles that are running on the Metro lines right now.

Can't wait 'til the 7,000 series hit the tracks later this year! They look really nice too. As a matter of fact, the new 7,000-series look interestingly similar to some of the newer subway train cars in New York City.

The 6000 and other newer ones are at the end of each train. The cars in the middle are the 1000 series. Sounds like you only ride in the center cars.

The 2000 and 3000 series were rehabbed back in the early-mid 2000's, before they looked and sounded just like the 4000 series. The 4000 series were supposed to be rehabbed later this decade but WMATA has decided to just retire them instead and just replace them with never railcars. The 1000 series, which are metro's oldest have the most seats but they have a billion problems. I rode on one yesterday and they give off a rough ride and the car I was on wasn't leveled with the station platforms and it almost seemed like the car was slanted on one side, which I'm sure it was. We'll have to deal with them until all of the 7000 series cars arrive, which won't be until 2016-2017 because its such a large order. The 6000 series are currently having the carpet removed from the railcars and thats a much needed upgrade.

Yeah, they're definitely pretty close. The bonus of those trains are the digital maps inside each car.

What I can't understand is why Metro continues to use this seat configuration -- it's horribly inefficient. I am not one to tout New York City all that often, but the bench configuration in their subway cars is superior.

So what dictates if the 6000 series has carpet or "resilient" flooring? I don't think I've ever seen one with the non-carpet flooring, but it seems like a nobrainer to never use anything made of fabric in such a place. Despite the repeated reminders about not drinking or eating, most people simply don't seem to care.
