Tourism is part of the game in this city. Before anyone moved here, they knew that D.C. was an important city and thus a focus of outside attention, so it should come as no surprise that people will come to visit.
If you hate tourists, go live in a town that you couldn't pay any sane person to visit, like Latimer, Mississippi.
I don't hate tourists - it's a pointless thing to do when you live in the nation's capital. However, I am annoyed at the ones who do not live in medium to large cities because they have a general lack of awareness of the people around them. This is why they block escalators, stop in front of the platform, congregate and take up the whole sidewalk, and not understand common etiquette for the city.
I'll do my part and continue to give them directions (though I did give wrong directions on purpose once to a women who was just beyond rude), but will also continue to avoid the tourist hotspots this summer
tourist don't make me upset at all. they're never rude or impolite, if
ya ask me. they always seem to be in a good mood too. they're not
frustrated like the locals who complain about them all the time lol.
another thing is segues in the bike lane, it's called a BIKE lane, not a segue lane, sheez
And pedestrians who stand/walk in the bike lanes around the White House and down Pennsylvania are just as bad. I just want to plow into one of those fools. I recently saw this sort of behavior in Europe of all places, committed by European tourists(Italian teenagers maybe?). Half the group was walking in the street all over the bike lane when there were huge sidewalks available. Tourists are rude everywhere. Asian tourists are just as annoying in Europe as they are here. "Sure, go right ahead and stand directly in front of me while I'm obvious trying to read an explanation of an exhibit at this museum."
I don't hate tourists. It's just about being aware of your surroundings and aware of your fellow man/woman and how so many of those types lack this awareness. I compare DC and NYC tourists a lot and I feel like DC tourists are so much worse sometimes. You usually do not have those massive herds in matching t-shirts in NYC like you do in DC. There are only so many times I can stall to avoid walking into the frame when someone is trying to take a picture before it starts becoming a huge inconvenience. The good thing is that both types tend to stay confined to certain areas of the city i.e. Times Square and the National Mall.
The standing on the left thing is really only a minor inconvenience and rarely bugs me. There's a special place in hell for the tourists that stop at the top and bottom of the escalators though.
