I just took a job at American University and I'm wondering where I should look for housing. I've been to DC/Northern Virginia a few times, but I'm still not super familiar with the area, so I'm not even sure where to start. I can afford about $2000 a month ($2200 MAX) and a studio would be just fine, although a one bedroom would be marvelous. Occasionally I will need to have a car for work, so parking is a must-whether it's on street parking or something else-which might be tricky in some places (which I get). Also, I'm single and 28, so I'd like an area with some life to it, nothing crazy, I don't need to be in the heart of 24/7 excitement, but it'd be great to have a few restaurants, maybe some shops, a corner market, etc. (oh, and safe too, I live alone). I honestly don't have an area preference, I'd just love to stay within about 30 minutes of AU. I understand traffic can get pretty ridiculous, and I am not a fan of sitting in endless congestion every day. I wouldn't be opposed to taking public transit to get to work either, as long as it's fairly convenient, as I'll really only need my car 1-2 days a week for my job.
So where should I be looking? Am I asking too much? Is my wish list even feasible on my budget? Any input would be great. Thanks!
Is it feasible? It's more than feasible. DC is expensive but it ain't Manhattan or San Francisco. $1500 will get you a studio in pretty much any neighborhood. $2000 will get you a 1 bedroom in pretty much any neighborhood.
Since you live pretty much anywhere, why not live within walking distance of work? Tenleytown is a good area with a bunch of restaurants and businesses on Wisconsin Ave. Street parking is pretty easy on the sidestreets there.
It's not a short walk from Tenleytown to AU, but it's certainly doable. And if you don't feel like walking, the school runs a free shuttle bus to the Tenleytown metro. Anywhere closer to AU than Tenleytown will not have much to walk to. That's actually a pretty suburban-feel part of town even though it's in the city.
Anywhere on the Red Line, really -- from Rockville on down to Tenleytown. Just pick what works for you.
