We just moved to the area from out of state & are living in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. I'll be commuting up to work on Rockville Pike near the White Flint Mall & am looking for recommendations for the best way to get there (starting from around 16th & S). Thanks in advance!

Redline Metro. Save yourself the headache of driving, seriously.

Red Line.

You're at White Flint in about 20 minutes.

Coming from 16th and S - you should walk down New Hampshire Avenue and get on at the Q Street entrance.

Just a warning - keep in mind Dupont Circle Station has a DEEP escalator.

Thanks. I'm sure I'll take the metro some, but as it's not cheap & I have free (paid for) parking at work, I may drive some as well. Any thoughts about the best way to drive?

I don't know if driving, with car wear and tear and gas expenses, is cheaper in the long run. Metro can be more relaxing than driving and you will have a seat going in that direction. The train ride could also be a good time to read or check email where there is cell service.

But if you really like the car commute, Connecticut all the way up to Strathmore Ave, beyond the Beltway might be the best day-to-day car commute. There are no freeways to speed things up, just lots of stop lights. The drive back into DC in the afternoon will likely be slower.

Living at DuPont Circle you should consider selling your car. Metro, Zipcars, Car2Go provide a much more cost effective and civilized alternative.

I used to commute a similar route, from Adams Morgan to Rockville. I was taking Rock Creek Parkway south, then 66/Roosevelt Bridge over the river, then GW Parkway north, Beltway, then 270 Exit 4.

While heading up Connecticut Ave is a shorter distance, this route has fewer lights. It took roughly the same time but was an "easier" drive most of the time.

I'd definitely second the metro option. Should save a lot of time and money in the long run.
