Default Metro Safety

Hi,

I'm looking to move from Australia to DC. I will most likely be working in NW.

I understand that I will be working long and erratic hours so I was wondering how safe is the metro at night travelling to NOVA etc or do I need to be looking at somewhere a cab ride from work???

I have grown up in a city in Australia so are not opposed to taking public transport at night but also know its safe in some areas and not a good idea in other places, particularly as a young woman.

Thanks

The Metro system itself is one of the safest in the world. Where in Northwest is your job? That would determine whether or not your walk to the closest Metro station is safe at night.

K St depends on how late you are working and where exactly you are in relation to the metro stop. At 9pm I would say no problem, but at 11 or midnight that's a different story. There isn't much residential along K st so most the pedestrian traffic is from the offices, bars, and restaurants in the area which does tend to thin out as it gets real late. Some of the metro stops and parks in that area are utilized as shelter by the homeless, so keep that in mind, though I'm not implying that makes it dangerous. If you could walk in a group or get escorted that might be a good idea until you are familiar with the area at night.

Don't listen to any of these scared suburbanites. You'll be fine on K street at night. I go to clubs on L street and K street twice a week. There are always people on K street and there is a big police presence in the area. There are homeless people but they are harmless. I have never heard of homeless people in DC attacking anyone. The Metro is probably the safest subway system on the east coast.

K Street is a major downtown artery. I assume you'll be using the Farragut North or Farragut West Metro station depending on what K Street building you're working in. You should have no problem walking to and from those stations late into the evening.

Good Luck and welcome to D.C.

Northwest is generally safe. I think you'll be fine.

Exactly. The Metro runs until 3:00 am on Friday and Saturday (midnight the other days), so it basically doesn't matter what hour it is anywhere along K Street. Or any of the streets nearby. It's just plain safe all the time. It's a little like going to the mall...
