I would say capital hill or eastern market are also good options. I would generally avoid anything on the red line because there is a point to minimizing transfers if possible. Though the places on the red line are more attractive.
As stated the Clarendon-Ballston, courthouse, etc are on the orange line sounds up your alley as well.
Frankly I would love to recommend the whole Takoma/Takoma Park area which would be ideal for the vegan and creative thing, but I think that is a down the line thing once you are out of school. It is a bit to far out there from the schools.

We've been looking a lot at Eastern Market. It feels like a good place to get introduced to DC with until we decide where our ideal hangout areas are. Transfers would make the commute that much longer, in the next couple of years I'll have a better idea of how much of a commute I'm really willing to make. I still have to go and wander around Courthouse/ballston I'll check it out tomorrow. Takoma Park seems cool I'll have to visit on a day off! There's so much to do/see! I have a lot of exploring to do!
