Thanks DCforever for the idea that I never would have thought of - maybe asking a business near Shady Grove Metro if he could park overnight there. I didn't know that there's a bus going from Shady Grove Metro to DOE, but I guess that makes a lot of sense. The hour commute is definitely something to think about -- but as you say, he would be able to read, etc. My son makes 1-1/2 hour commute to his job, which is awful and of course he would like to avoid it ... but he does get a lot of web-surfing and reading done in that time. Still, an hour commute is a lot to ask. Hubby is currently doing that, except he's driving, as opposed to a subway or train. It's incredibly draining and to be avoided. Transit would be better, but still not ideal.

That's about an hour commute including the train, but he can read, return phone calls etc so it's not necessarily lost time like a car commute.
You know what the problem with this post is? She doesn't say anything about salary, expectation of when they have to be at work, and everything else in between.

The traffic is horrible here, and that's from someone from Atlanta traffic.

HOWEVER, from DC to Germantown traffic is pretty easy. It's almost better to drive to work from DC than to take the metro or MARC (which runs from Union Station to Germantown). It really does depend on where you live though. You need to live near the highway, because middle of DC takes forever in the morning for you to get to the highway. I knew a lot of people who commuted from Arlington VA to Germantown, and it's ok for about a year, before it drive someone mad.

So, 50 something, why not Rockville, Germantown, or Bethesda?

Driving from NW DC to Germantown in the morning won't be so bad.

Google map has a public transportation segment. According to the site, it's about a 15 minute bus ride, which seems reasonable given the distance. I can't see him making the drive in less than 45 minutes under the best case so for me an hour on the train/bus is a no brainer.

I'm a long time DC resident and my wife and I love the city. The quality of life is very high. Close in suburbs like Bethesda are pretty good, but the outer suburbs are cultural wastelands.
