The whole "everyone just hates DC" thing is almost laughable too. The WaPo, along with several other area publications, is always quick to pleasure itself to any report that makes DC seem without compare (e.g. "fittest city," "smartest city," etc). If a mass shooting happened at a workplace in Seattle, I'd feel bad for the victims and their families but I wouldn't be particularly shocked.
I think people are just not surprised any more. The Aurora shooting was somewhat shocking because we hadn't had such a big shooting in a civilian area in quite some time. Newtown was shocking because of the kids. Fort Hood? Forgotten about rather quickly. That Sikh temple in Wisconsin? Forgotten about.
