1. Can they change it to whatever name they choose, without the burden of the financial reciprocation (e.g., Everyone has to buy new jerseys and seeing how this season's going, it's unlikely they will be a hit).
2. What name is out there besides, Capitols, Nationals, and Politico (I made that last one up).
People forget to think. And they forget that NFL franchise is a business. They try to win the Super Bowl, because they make money off of it. So, what name is appropriate for a business that's been around forever?
It's like re-branding Ford or Ferrari. It's extremely difficult, and it's a long process. It has to uphold the past, yet, it has to remind the people that it's a revolved version of RedSkins and not something done out of protest. That's never a successful business model.
If they changed it to, "Skins", that will actually work. Washington Skins tend to have multiple meaning behind it, and it reflects the political facade of DC as well as utilizing "Red Skins" name.
Why would they name it that in the first place unless it is to disrespect the red man?
The owner said he was doing it out of respect for the coach, who a lot of people thought was Sioux (he wasn't). I personally think they just didn't want to use the name of the Boston Braves after they moved out of the Braves' stadium into the Red Sox stadium. They wanted to sound similar to Red Sox while keeping the American Indian theme. The owner was pretty racist, though, so the thought process that went through his head was likely not what would go through yours.

There's also "shirts vs skins" and "pigskins" that fit a football motif.

No that would never work.
The Skins sounds too pornographic for the PC crowd. Skins = Nudity
It would be too offensive to religious people.
I doubt if most people from dc want to change it really.
If most people wanted to change it, it would be changed. Snyder is a man who cares about making money. He'd be all to happy to sell the new jerseys to people.

I'm sure he looked into changing the name, found its too expensive I guess, or he might have done it. That is what I've heard. At some point, the name will change, it has too....I just have no idea when.
But think about it, you pay $800 million for a brand, then the head of the NFL wants you to change it? That's not really fair....its the one thing I support Dan Snyder on, although I think the name should be changed.
Aside from the fact that it offends people, it's also not a great mascot or team name to begin with. "Because that's how we've always done it" is not a good reason to keep doing something. Just change the name and be done with it.
I'd add that re-branding can be advantageous. I don't know all the ins and outs, but remember when the Buffalo Sabres changed their colors from blue and gold to red and black, and they changed their logo? I thought it was hideous and kind of weird to change the teams colors of all things, but I figured it was a move designed to reinvigorate the franchise and force fans to buy all new merch. It coincided with a move to a new stadium, so seemed like a re-launch of the team to get people excited. Not sure why the Redskins couldn't do something similar.
I doubt if dc wants to start over with a
new nfl team with zero superbowl rings.
