From what I understand, SAIS is actually the most well-regarded school of international affairs in the US. I believe that Foreign Policy did some sort of ranking on this (SAIS also seems to be the most selective with the lowest intake rate). When I speak to my colleagues in the IR field (all graduates of MA programs, I myself have a JD but thought about getting an MA), SAIS seems to come out on top - even those that graduated from other schools. I'm not sure about GWU and AU, I'm sure they're good but I think if you're not going to the top 3 in this field which is so specialized and narrow, then maybe you should rethink it since it costs $40gs+ per year.
Ok...I just asked again, and my coworkers tell me the following:
If you want to go to:
World Bank/IMF - SAIS (apparently 10% to 12% of the WB staff graduated from SAIS)
International Development - SAIS (apparently their programs is regarded as the best in the world, but you'll have to do a lot of economics - which is perhaps why they're the best?)
Foreign Service - Georgetown, SAIS, Columbia (although I'm sure GWU and AU have a good amount of people in this area as well)
Consulting/Banking - SAIS/Columbia/Georgetown
Security & Intelligence - Any good school will do, or so I'm told.
