Maryland "pulls" them. It's a Liberal state that does more for those with lower incomes than Virginia. For example, MD expanded Medicaid while Virginia didn't. When we lived in MoCo, they gave us an extra tax refund check each summer because our income was lower.

If you can afford it, it provides better schools, lower crime, nicer housing, better retail, more employment opportunities, etc, etc etc. If you're looking for suburbs, the quality of those in VA exceed most in MD. If you're looking for urban density and walkability, even the most desirable places in MD with those attributes (Bethesda, Chevy Chase) cannot hold a candle to Arlington or Alexandria.

DC is great when you're young, but once you have a vested interest in the community around you and the quality of life factor outside of bars for twenty somethings, VA has a whole lot more to offer.

I moved to the old town area in 2007 and it's been incredibly dramatic at how quickly those dangerous slums have been mowed over in favor of 600k condos.

Thank god Bill Euille is a native alexandrian who also happens to be black. If he had been from anywhere else or not black, he would have been absolutely crucified for selling out to the developers.

In the end, Alexandria has become an incredibly affluent and desirable place to live. They should erect a statue for Mayor Euille
Dangerous slums?
I used to live in Alexandria and it was never as bad as you claimed above.

Point is most of the low income locals that are getting pushed out of SE and NE tend to move to inner beltway PG county.

When the majority of property and violent crime inside the beltway in virginia comes from PG or SE, you might understand if they're a little touchy (i had no idea they were). Alexandria is especially susceptible to this thanks to the easy access to the WW bridge. The cops are so familiar with it that anytime there's a robbery or major crime, they station themselves on Route 1 leaving Old Town towards the WW bridge intercept the inevitable
