If you want Republicans, you have to go to Spring Valley. It is technically the only part of DC that votes Republican more than Democrat. The term 'Georgetown Liberals' didn't come into being just on a whim.

I lived in Georgetown, in what was known as 'East Village'. We were far enough away from the students that they didn't both us on a daily basis (i.e. not peeing on our porch, as is the case in other parts). I liked it for the ease of dining, shopping, but hated it when it got filled with traffic and chaos (i.e. I usually was at home by 10). I'd say it is safe, but I've seen statistics that some streets in Gtown are worse than their antipode in SE. Really is a perception thing.

If you are going to live there with a car (not a necessity) than you really should consider a parking spot. I lived up around Q Street and was lucky in that the Tudor Place took up a whole block without any actually living there (i.e. lots of free parking on the street), but if I was down closer to N/O I would have had some pretty annoying nights trying to find a space.

icazares is on a distinguished road
Georgetown is certainly not my favorite part of the city. I spent 6 years in DC and I didn't make even one friend from Georgetown. I think it's a remarkable statistic, because I met many people from there. Of course everybody is different but in general I think the stereotype of the superficial yuppie from Georgetown is partially true. I must admit that the neigborhood is very beautiful, there is no doubt about it. There are some parks that are IMO the best in all DC. In general, I find the north part of Georgetown much more interesting than the area next to M street. Another reason why I don't like Georgetown is parking. That's a nightmare. Go check yourself.

My favorite part of DC is the zip code 20009, especially Logan Circle and Dupont. I found people more genuine and actually engaged in the task of improving the neighborhoods, which all have seen a dramatic turnaround in the last 5-10 years. I do believe, and I may be one of the few people saying this, that zip code 20009 is one of the best in the United States. Architecture is spectacular, diversity is a plus (etnicity and professional background) and the sense of community is rarely seen in other parts of the country. Everything is around the corner as well. Besides, there is a lot of singles action in U Street and Adams Morgan. Adams Morgan is the only entertainment area of DC that reminds us that we are in a metro area with more than 4 million people. It must be experienced. When I was a single my pick up place was Adams Morgan. It was never Georgetown.
