Aloha! My husband and I are moving from Hawaii to the Washington DC area. We do not have any children. He will be working in the Arlington area and I work as a special education teacher at an elementary school. We are looking for an area to rent in which it will be a short commute to his work as well as mine. (30 mins or so.)

We can spend up up $1800 for rent.

We need 2+ bedrooms

We would like it to be safe and pet-friendly.

Prefer Townhouse, but a condo is okay.

Thanks so much for all your help. There are so many elementary schools out there and housing options. I look forward to your responses!

It will be a tough hunt, but you will probably be able to find a place right in arlington. Check out the 22202 zip code.

You have a pretty decent chunk of change which should be able to afford you a two bedroom in most communities, Arlington included. It's great in that it gives you more options, but bad in that it gives you more option . If your husband is working in Arlington, I would recommend sticking to one of the close-in suburbs for an easy commute. Arlington would work just fine. It's largely safe, minus a handful of iffy apartment complexes. The city of Falls Church (an important distinction between the city limits and the Falls Church postal code) would be another great choice, and would allow from virtually any place in the city, a quick and painless commute either via car or Metro into Arlington, assuming your husband's workplace is Metro accessible. Unfortunately, with traffic being as it is in this area, a 30 minute commute won't let you get that far away from Arlington, but you could still check out places in McLean (very safe, wealthy, residential), Alexandria (more urban, public transit), or possibly out towards Tysons Corner, Dunn Loring, Merrifield, and maybe even Vienna or Springfield or Annandale; and you would be within commuting range of the Fairfax County, Arlington County, Falls Church City and Alexandria City public schools so you could pore over which school systems have the best offers and then from that, determine which individual schools have openings, and would be a good fit.

You and D&B haved summed it up well. Lots of options, which is both good and bad. As a blanket statement, prefer North Arlington (north of Route-50) to South Arlington, and in the case of Falls Church, note that the City runs its own (excellent) school system which is independent of the (also excellent, but huge) Fairfax County system that covers everything around Falls Church that isn't to the east, the latter being Arlington. So you'd have three potential public school employers in the area...Arlington County, Falls Church City, and Fairfax County...
