How much would a recent college grad make as a claim examiner in Washington, DC?
Say they had no internship compared to someone who did an internship while in college. What would be the difference in salary?

Are claims examiner positions a dime a dozen in DC? I had a career as a Social Security Disability claims examiner and hearing officer. My numbers were excellent and I burned no bridges - retiring from the State of South Carolina three and a half years ago at 52, but the disability determination agency in DC seems to be a very vaguely structured entity as far as figuring out its structure and applying for a position. Is "claims examiner" a true career? Are claims examiner skills in general in demand in DC?

In your case, decgrad2014, I think you would need about four years of "professional" experience ("Professional" meaning pretty much anything - in other words a job.) to get a Social Security Disability claims examiner position. I don't know about other types of claims examiner positions.

Probably start out as a GS7. Why don't you look at usajobs and see what the salary range is for that position?

What kind of claims examiner?

Just read any job listing really. Minimum qualification for a GS7 is a college degree and a 2.95 GPA (I really think they should raise this). Check out the Pathways Program.

GS-7 to GS-9... can get a GS-11 depending on your background.

Pay listings are here: Pay & Leave : Salaries & Wages - OPM.gov

So... 42k to 52k annual... maybe 63k.

Far as internship vs. none... no one knows the answer to that question for sure (we all have opinions, of course). Depends on agency, need, experience, and if they "hit it well" with the person hiring. Face it, there are so many factors.

My opinion? I'd rather have the internship vs. not having one... that would be one chip I could use to get a step increase or go up a GS level.
