Sounds like a really, really stupid idea. Building a practice facility is not going to make thousands of people flock to Shaw and spend millions to boost revenue.
They have a hard enough time getting people to even go to the Verizon Center and care about the Wizards.
I think they want it to impact the area similar to how Chinatown was impacted by the Verizon Center. The problem is you are trying to upend residential amenities to accomplish this and Shaw is a much different type of neighborhood than Chinatown. To me, I am guessing this is not happening in DC, but I could be wrong. With the soccer team trying to get their stadium, I can't imagine this going through. Leonsis is adamant about having a practice facility (wants to have one similar to other teams in the league to attract free agents) too and with the way he uses Kettler Iceplex, he can make it useful for the community, but I just think the location is all wrong for his vision.
Build it right next to Redskins park in Ashburn so at least they can get the overflow, like, Oh shoot we can't get into Redskins park, but what's this? Basketball? Let me check it out
If they ever wanted to get serious about renovating the Uline Arena, this would be a good fit there. Besides that, I can't really think of anywhere in DC where this would belong.
It just seems like a tight fit all the way around. They should probably look at SW as a potential spot. There's nothing there, and it's relatively close to Chinatown.
