Best bank in D.C. Metro area
My wife and I lived in the D.C. area for little while and have decided to move back. When we lived there we banked at BB&T and we had an awful experience. Can anyone please recommend their favorite bank for personal finances (free checking and online banking are always nice). Any suggestions? Thanks!

To me, the biggest factor was convenient location of ATM's and how long the lines are at those during lunch hour or at 5:00 on a Friday afternoon. That led me to PNC, and I've been very happy with them. Their offices are open until 5:30 everyday, and they are open on the weekend as well. That said, I do all my actual banking through a credit union, and if you can find one that you are eligible for, that would be a worthwhile option to examine as well...

I work for Wachovia and used to bank with City of Alexandria Employees CU and have had good experiences with both. If you want convience i know that Wachovia has 12 branches in Alexandria addresses alone. Two branches (Mt. Vernon Plaza and 4600 Duke St.) are open till 7 on weekdays. City of Alexandria CU is not as convient as a national bank but they are a small CU with very satisfied customers. I know that bank is working very closely with TC Williams HS to educate the student body about banking. So i think those are good options. (not trying to advertise Wachovia, okay?)

best bank
A major factor is the availability of the bank's ATMs. And, that depends on whether you located in the District, in MD, or in VA. In VA (at least), Wachovia seems to have the most branches.
I bank with Citibank, which has few branches in Virginia, many in DC, and which uses all of the 7-11 franchises as free ATMs. Thus, I can get cash just about anywhere from my Citibank account without paying an ATM fee.

I've been with Bank of America and it's earlier incarnation in DC for about 25 years. I've never had a reason to change.

Ditto for BofA. I used to be with Chevy Chase, and while there are plenty of branches etc., I def. prefer Bank of America.
