Question Relocating to DC

I am thinking about moving to the Washington, D.C. area within the next couple of months. I’ve been looking at several jobs and grad schools nearby, but I’m still not sure of the best place to live. If possible, I would like to find a small one-bedroom apartment that I can afford on a single salary in a safe, quiet neighborhood with a reasonable commute to D.C. I am coming from a small city compared to Washington, so I would prefer to live outside of the city. Am I better off looking in Virginia or Maryland? Any advice would be appreciated.

I would go with Virginia if I were you. Try Vienna... they might still have some affordable 1br apartments and it's accessible to the metro.
