So I'll be moving to DC anytime between 6 months to a year to start a job at the Ronald Reagan Building downtown whenever my security clearance is finished. Coming from Florida though and having searched around the area a bit for a few days, I'm having a hard time finding some good apts in good areas on the cheaper side, but I am willing to go up in price if the area if nice and walkable.
So considering my work location, are there any larger studios of smaller 1 bedrooms I can find to rent around the DC/Virginia area starting in the $1200-1300 range? I've looked in Maryland, but I haven't seen many options for that much cheaper and the commute is much more. If I went up to the $1500-1600 range, would I be able to find a bit more then and in what areas?
The problem you are finding is pretty typical. You will not have much luck in the $1200-$1300 range in a decent neighborhood. But in the $1500-$1600 range you will find some stuff.

You can definitely get a studio at least for $1500 just about anywhere. That's as low as it gets though and don't expect a lot of amenities. I would actually not look in Crystal City. Apartments will be cheaper in the neighborhoods off of Wilson Blvd because there are older independent buildings. Try this site too: www.arlingtonurbanrentals.com.
Apartments around here that are $1200-$1300 have roaches and/or mice.
