I'm moving to downtown D.C. in a couple of months will be renting an apartment in Chinatown. Is it safe to walk around at night in that area? I'm a single woman and would like to take walks from Chinatown to the National Mall during the evening hours...around 7 pm to 10 pm. However, if safety is an issue, then I'll just use my apartment gym to get some exercise.

I'm a survivor of sexual assault and I'm always concerned about where I go because I'm a single woman.

It's an urban environment, but you'll have plenty of female company being careful out there.

I would say its safe as long as you walk on the main streets to get to the National Mall. I hang out in Chinatown a lot and the only thing you really have to be careful of is all the rats in the area at night. Other than that, I've never had any issues with people. You may get hit up for money by all the homeless people but that's it.

If people live in a place, so do rats. You may see one now and again just about anywhere in DC, but they are not actually a problem except during occasional population spikes.

Chinatown is pretty safe.. though it can by an annoying place. Especially the intersection of 7th and H street. Always something obnoxious going on there. Again, not dangerous, just annoying.

Agreed. Lots of shady characters outside of McDonald's ALL THE TIME! I do love Chinatown though. Clyde's, Legal Seafood, Zaytinya, Pod Hotel, Bar Deco. Very cool spot.

Ive seen assaults in broad daylight here. At the end of the day, it is a Green line stop. If i was paying top dollar, it wouldnt be this neighborhood. Its robbery

It's also a RED and YELLOW line stop, duh! And I'd guess that people who live and work in the Penn Quarter area would know more about it than would the average race-baiting interloper.

hmmm, really depends but I wouldn't take a chance on walking around at night. As mentioned above, 7th and Hst (near metro) and front of McDonald's can be quite a scene. Stay where the lights are.
