My husband and I are empty nesters and both recently accepted jobs in the DC area. My husband will be commuting to the Germantown area by car and I will be commuting into downtown DC (near Federal Center SW Metro) by either car or metro. We are looking for good places to live, especially newer townhomes. We like the looks of the new developments in the Hyattsville Arts District but are also considering the Silver Spring, Wheaton, or possibly Gaithersburg as well. Three questions for the forum:
1. Does anyone know about the reverse commute from Hyattsville to Germantown?
2. Any comments from any current residents of Arts District Hyattsville?
2. Any recommendations about where to live considering this split commute?

I would probably look more into Silver Spring or Bethesda (depending on price range). Both are fairly convenient to either workplace and lack the higher crime rates of Hyattsville and PG County in general.

The only part of Hyattsville to Germantown that could be considered a reverse commute is 270 Northbound.

You could check out the Montgomery Village area in Gaithersburg. There is a variety of housing - condos, townhomes, single homes. From that area, he would have a relatively short commute. You could consider the MARC train instead of using Metro. Parking is free at most MARC stations (provided they don't share it with a Metro stop). The MARC takes you to Union Station - from there you could pick up the Metro to L'Enfant. Total commute is about an hour.

Default Follow-Up

Thanks once again for the input. We just returned from a househunting trip and based on your recommendations we decided to actually drive the to/from commute on three different weekdays. We were pleasantly surprised - the 6:15 am commute from Hyattsville to Germantown was smooth all three days. The return trip was a little slower but not bad, especially the day we avoided I-495 and took the back roads. We also liked the community in Hyattsville but are considering some in the Silver Spring, Wheaton, and Hillandale area as well. Thanks again!
