Every city has its good and bad areas. There is no exception to this basic fact. It takes time to learn or get a feel for where one melts into another.

NW is no guarantee for safety. Some idiot girl and her boyfriend started stuff with me last week - and this was in Tenleytown, which is in upper NW and one of the cleaner and safer areas!

Nothing is guaranteed. All you can do is have street smarts and be alert and you'll be fine.

I used to live in NW DC. I moved in November 2006. I got tired of people breaking into my house. I got tired of my car and my husband car getting broken into. I finally had enough when I was 8 months pregnant and our house got broken into. Within 5 minutes of leaving my home in NW DC, my husnabd called me and inform me our house was broken into. I had to move. The area was Historic Takoma Park on the DC side.

I think when people say "NW" DC they inadvertently mean anything west of 16th Street. While that line has softened eastward in recent years, risk of crime east of 16th is no different than NE or SE.

The other day, my dad was driving around in NW (I think) with his car doors unlocked, and some guy hopped in the car when he stopped for a light and demanded cash. So he gave him $20 and the guy left. I guess the only moral to that story is lock your car doors (?)

Yeah, I don't know what I would have done if that would have happened to me. I never have cash on me (or not very often) I guess I'd have to hand the guy my credit card, and then call my bank to cancel it as soon as I got him out of the car. Maybe I should start keeping an emergency $20 in the glove box.

That reminds me of the movie "Nothing to Lose" when Martin Lawrence get's into Tim Robbins car with a gun. He tells him to give him his keys and wallet. Tim Robbins looks over and tells him "you picked the wrong guy on the wrong day," locks the doors and hits the gas.

Im not tryna sound like a gangsta or nuthin but we are NOT THINKING ABOUT U!!! well u kno unless u look like u have money... listen the only reason ppl rob is because they dont have anything or enough. The government doesnt do anything to help anybody that live in the ghettos and hoods and instead of trying to help us all they do is try to shut us down, raise the prices of ur homes, and kick us out to PG and that is why PG county is soo bad now. Oh yea and btw i live on 14th st NW and i dont wanna rob anybody but if the government continues tearing down places and building $200,000+ condoes RIGHT NEXT TO ppl that are strugglin wat do u think will happen???
