Another update
I was in DC for an on-site interview yesterday - I think I interviewed well, but won't know for sure for a couple of weeks.
I stayed at the L'Enfant Plaza hotel, which connects to the L'Enfant metro station via an underground shopping mall. My room had a nice view of the Potomac, and of the cranes over SW DC. From the 14th floor, the SW seems within walking distance of the Mall.
I just about melted from the heat in my dark suit - walking around and riding the metro. The heat and humidity reminded me of my years in Houston and Atlanta ;-)

Yup, a good chunk of SW is walking distance to the Mall (among other things). I generally walk to my office near Union Station, or HQ near Archives, or Capitol Hill. The monuments and Gallery Place/Chinatown aren't far either.

rec'd tentative offer
I rec'd a tentative offer today! (I hope I can bargain for a step increase ;--)
I've decided to rent a small apartment for awhile before jumping into the condo market. There seem to be plenty of suitable apartment options in Capitol Hill and in the SW.

Congrats! Capitol Hill and SW are both relatively nice and quiet areas to buy and both are certainly in central locations. One note, though, just be streetwise at night because there are some dicey neighborhoods nearby. That aside, sounds like you'll just about be able to walk to work which should be a real perk in addition to being close to restaurants, museums, etc.

Update - found a place in SW Waterfront
I've been in DC for a couple of months now.
I rented an "executive one bedroom" (554 SF) unit in a co-op across from the Waterfront-SEU metro station. I can walk to work in about 25 minutes, or take the metro. Rent is $1300 - almost exactly 1/3 of my monthly take-home pay.
SW Waterfront is a very quiet residential neighborhood (at least the parts I've been in). From my 4th floor balcony, I can see the Capitol dome, the Washington monument, the Washington Channel of the Potomac, and 9 construction cranes.
So far, I've been really enjoying living in the city (though I do kinda miss the cold and snow of Montana - I haven't worn a coat in DC yet).
I've eaten a couple of half-smokes from those small food trailers you see everywhere. Not sure if I've been getting authentic half-smokes, but they are tastier than a regular hotdog, for sure.

^^ I love the woman at 4th & Independence. She's got some choice candy options, too (like Boston Baked Beans.....I haven't seen those in years).
Welcome to the neighborhood!
