Default Moving To Dc

There is a strong possibility I will be locating to DC in the near future. Where is a good community (suburban) that is not to far (less than a 45 min commute at most) where you can get a decent sized house with a backyard (2 big dogs) for under 300K. ??? I don't care about taking the train, and I would prefer to be in Maryland. My primary concern is a good neighborhood, I don't want to be anywhere near a "shady" area... is this possible or should I just reconcile with the idea of renting a house instead?
